Mechanical Design Engineer
The short version
You’ll design and work with the ground systems that make airship operations actually work. From containers and field hangars to tools and hydrogen infrastructure, you’ll take responsibility for all mechanical structures that support operations on the ground, and make them safer, more usable, and easier to operate.
About Kelluu
We are turning the real world into a digital one, with accuracy down to the smallest detail. Imagine a near future where everything you see can be explored through data delivered by Kelluu, and where AI works continuously across that data to find what you need to know. Everything turned into answers.
We’re a Finnish deep-tech company, headquartered in Joensuu with offices in Helsinki and Tampere. The team is growing fast, the goals are ambitious, and we’re hiring people who want to build something that matters.
Our technology is flight-proven and operational. We’re a NATO DIANA Phase 2 alumni with several thousands of hours of autonomous BVLOS flight experience, active programmes across multiple NATO nations, and a rapidly growing team. We operate in both defence and civilian markets: the same technology that supports border security also monitors critical infrastructure and the environment.
P.S. We just raised 15M€ Series A.
Why this role exists
Our operations are growing and ground systems need a dedicated owner who can see the whole picture, design the steel and structures, and turn operational needs into robust, real-world solutions.
Our airship platform is moving into real-world operations where reliability, safety, and speed of deployment matter as much as the aircraft itself.
This role exists to take full ownership of the ground systems that make those operations possible—from containers and field hangars to hydrogen infrastructure. The goal is not just to design individual structures, but to define a ground station concept that is safe, usable, mobile, and easily replicable across locations.
What you’ll own
The impact you’ll have:
Designing steel/aluminium structures and mechanical systems for ground operations, including containers, field hangars, tools, and supporting equipment
Taking care of ground station concepts, from semi-permanent setups to fully mobile systems used in exercises
Designing and improving hydrogen-related ground infrastructure, including handling, storage, and refuelling of pressurised hydrogen tanks
Defining what equipment, tools, and structures ground stations need — and how everything is stored, organised, and used
Designing custom tools, handling equipment, and support structures tailored to operational needs
Developing detailed modifications to existing containers and systems, including usability improvements such as redesigned sleds for moving airships in and out of containers
Improving final assembly setups and workflows at the Reijola site through practical mechanical design updates
Ensuring ground systems serve the operations team in real life: they work reliably, stay organised, and make operations smoother instead of harder
Your team
You’ll work closely with a small, experienced mechanical and electrical engineering team spread between Joensuu and Tampere. Day to day, you’ll collaborate with mechanical and electrical designers, and colleagues responsible for safety, documentation, and flight operations. The atmosphere is hands-on, practical, and informal — designs move quickly from CAD to workshop to testing.
What success looks like
By 3 months, you will have:
Taken ownership of existing 3D design
Become comfortable with our tools, materials, and development rhythm
By 6 months:
Independently designing and iterating new mechanical structures
Keeping mechanical documentation accurate, useful, and up to date
By 12 months:
Fully owning lightweight mechanical design for key airship subsystems
Improving design-for-manufacturing practices
Being a go-to person for practical, lightweight mechanical solutions
What we’re looking for
You’ll thrive here if you have:
At least few years of experience in mechanical design or structural engineering
Strong 3D CAD skills (Inventor or similar)
Experience with mechanical design for durability
Even better if you also bring:
Knowledge of different materials and working with them
Background in aviation, robotics, or other weight-critical systems
What you get
The opportunity:
Hands-on involvement in design, manufacturing, and testing
Dive deeply in our mechanical designs
Direct influence on how our platform develops
The practicalities:
Salary range: €3,500–4,300/month, depending on experience
Healthcare, Lunch benefit, Culture, sports, and wellbeing benefit (Epassi), Phone
The tools you need to do your best work
Flexible work culture — results matter more than desks
The kind of place this is
Kelluu is a dual-use deep-tech company at the intersection of autonomy, AI, and aerial intelligence. We build technology that serves both national security and society, and we take that responsibility seriously.
We’re scaling fast, which means you’ll have real influence on how things are built. The flipside: things move quickly, priorities shift, and everyone wears a few hats. If you want a finished playbook and a clear lane, this probably isn’t the right fit. If you want to write the playbook yourself, it might be exactly right.
We use AI tools extensively, not as a gimmick, but because it lets a growing team move faster than anyone expects. We expect everyone to be curious about how to work smarter.
